The Yoruba Council of Elders has said competence, character and track record of performance should be the key determinant factors to pick the next president of Nigeria.
The Secretary-General of the YCE, Dr Kunle Olajide, said this after the meeting of the group in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Thursday.
He said the group was not keen that the next president must come from any particular region because the situation which the country found itself required a competent leader with character to fix the problems.
The National President of YCE, Justice Ademola Bakare, and other leaders of the group flanked Olajide as he addressed journalists.
He said, “The Yoruba Council of Elders is interested in who leads the country in 2023. Whoever wants to aspire to lead this country must be a Nigerian; he must have competence, character, capacity and track records of performance.
“At our level here we have gone beyond tribalism or parochial interest. We are interested in the good of this country. The situation in the country has deteriorated even when you are talking in terms of federal appointments, but the infrastructure in the South- West is most deplorable.
“So we want a true and true Nigerian wherever he comes from, but he must have competence, character, capacity and track records of performance.”
Asked about the continued incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo aka Igboho, the YCE boss said Igboho did nothing wrong by asking for Yoruba self-determination.
He said, “The federal authority should be part of that trial in Benin Republic, we have an envoy there, whatever offence Igboho has committed must go through the rule of law.”
The group called on the Federal Government to address the problem of unemployment, especially among the youth.
