CECAFA U-20 Women’s Championship: Najjemba Strikes Uganda Past Tanzania

Tanzania 0-1 Uganda

• Eritrea 2-0 Djibouti

• Ethiopia 1-0 Burundi

Livewire Fauziah Najjemba was the difference as Uganda overcame Tanzania 1-0 in the ongoing CECAFA U-20 Women’s championship at the FUFA Technical Center, Njeru on Saturday.

Najjemba scored from the penalty spot after a 73rd minute foul on Shamirah Nalugya by Ally Koku Kipanga inside the area, taking her tally to ten goals off four games atop the scorer’s log

The Uganda U-20 team captain had her first attempt early when she beat defender Emeliana Isaya Mbimu for pace before goalkeeper Husna Zuberi Mtunda denied her shot with a masterclass save.

Winger Margret Kunihira too had a great chance to stretch the lead when she cut inside before her stunner went just inches wide while Tanzania’s forward Aisha Masaka was kept in the pocket throughout.

Now on 12 points, pacesetters Uganda will need at least a draw to emerge champions of the 2020 edition when they play against close competitors Ethiopia next week on Tuesday.

Both are tied up on point accumulation but Uganda has a superior goal difference (20) than the Ethiopians (14) who will need maximum points to clinch the crown.

Bottom-lined Djibouti will play Tanzania as Eritrea and Burundi face-off in the other matchday five fixtures. This edition is played on the round robin format and the team to top the 6-team log after five games will emerge champions.
