CAF: (November 7, 2021) Hosts Uganda and Ethiopia have maintained an unbeaten run at the on-going 2021 CECAFA Women’s U-20 Championship in the Eastern town of Njeru.

After twelve matches played, the two teams are tied on 12 points each, although Uganda are top of the log with a superior goal difference.

On Saturday Ethiopia briefly reclaimed top spot on the log in a tournament being played on a round robin basis after a 1-0 win against Burundi.

Ariet Pdong netted the lone goal after 58 minutes after a good cross by Naredos Getenet. Burundi tried to fight back and level matters, but failed to break through Ethiopia’s defending line.

“I am happy that my players have worked hard to win again and we need to work hard and also win our last game against Uganda,” said Ethiopia’s head coach Firew Hailegebral after the match.

In the second match Eritrea registered their first win in the competition. The Eritrean team humbled Djibouti 2-0.

Second half goals from defender Rim Gezae Yemane and forward Diana Estifanos Teklemichael were enough to enable Eritrea to pick maximum points. Eritrtea’s coach Jemal Ibrahim Suleman said it was good for his team to pick a win after three defeats earlier suffered. “We shall work hard to try and get another in our last match against Burundi,” added the Eritrean coach.

In the last game Uganda defeated arch-rivals Tanzania 1-0. Tanzanian defender Christer John Bahera fouled Shamirah Nalugya in the box and the referee pointed for a penalty.

Uganda’s captain Fauzia Najjemba made no mistake slotting the penalty kick past Tanzanian goalkeeper Husna Zuberi Mtunda.

Tanzania’s Aisha Elias Masaka and Aisha Juma Mnunka tried to push forward to try and knock in some goals, but the Ugandan defenders gave them no room.

“We need to keep working hard and make sure we beat Ethiopia in the last match to be able to win the trophy,” said Uganda’s head coach Ayub Khalifa Kiyingi after the match.

Already 52 goals have been scored in the tournament which will climax on November 9th.
