Super Rugby: Jaguares clinch South African conference with big win over Sharks

Try scoring doubles to outside backs Emiliano Boffelli and Sebastian Cancelliere carried the Jaguares to a 34-7 win over the Sharks to earn top place in Super Rugby’s South African conference.

The Argentinians scored five tries in a commanding performance in Buenos Aires on Saturday (Sunday NZ time) after dominating from the outset.

Their five-point haul meant the Jaguares hold an unassailable 10-point conference with one game remaining and has guaranteed them a home playoff game.

A delighted home crowd got their peso’s worth with all five tries shared among the Jaguares’ back three after their pack had dominated a disappointing Sharks outfit.

Jaguares Emiliano Boffelli scored two tries and set up another in a 34-7 win over the Sharks.

Fullback Boffelli bagged his first try in the 16th minute and the Sharks were relieved to be only trailing 12-0 at the interval after the home side had dominated territory and possession.

Joaquin Diaz Bonilla failed to make the Sharks pay for their ill-discipline in the first half with the Pumas fly half shanking a couple of penalty attempts.

Bonilla raised the flags in the 45th minute and Boffelli scored his second try, snaffling his own kick to beat the Sharks defence.

A Boffelli break lead put Cancelliere in the clear for a 59th minute try, and a 26-0 lead.

The Sharks – who remain bottom of the conference – finally scored in the 67th minute through through midfielder Andre Esterhuizen, but the Jaguares had the final say when left wing Santiago Carreras gathered in his own grubber kick for the home side’s fifth try.

Jaguares coach Gonzalo Quesada can now afford to rest key players for next week’s dead-rubber home game against Japan’s Sunwolves.

The Sunwolves crashed to a 31-18 defeat to the Stormers in Cape Town on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).
