Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi will in all likelihood get another start when the club takes on Golden Arrows on Tuesday, following a groin injury suffered by Itumeleng Khune over the weekend.
The Nigerian international had dropped down to the bench after the Bafana shot-stopper’s return to action, but his spell in the dugout was short-lived after he was called upon 26 minutes into the 1-0 victory over Baroka on Saturday.
Daniel Akpeyi shines in unexpected Kaizer Chiefs appearance
He churned out a solid performance, keeping a clean sheet – a second consecutive one by the club – and earning the man of the match award as Chiefs consolidated their spot at the top of the league table.
Akpeyi, who had a bit of a shaky start to his career at the club, has fared better in his second season, and is delighted to have gotten another opportunity.
“It’s good to be man of the match. As a professional player you always have to be ready for anything, especially in the goalkeeper department,” said Akpeyi.
“The two clean sheets [against AmaZulu and Baroka] are actually a motivation to the goalkeeping department and to the team generally because when you keep a clean sheet you’re not going to lose the game. So it’s a huge motivation going into the next game.”
Akpeyi joined Kaizer Chiefs from Chippa United midway through the 2018/19 season, arriving at a time when Khune had just been ruled out for the rest of the campaign.
While it’s still unclear how long the Bafana goalkeeper will be out of action, a good performance against Arrows will go some way in helping the 33-year-old win his spot back in the Nigerian national team, after missing out on representing his country in their last outing.
“I am just working on myself, working on my career, working on my profession,” said Akpeyi.
“I think in the national team I’ve played my part, going to the World Cup, Nations Cup [2019 Africa Cup of Nations] from the junior to the senior level.”
Prior to his appearance against Baroka, Akpeyi had made four starts out Kaizer Chiefs’ five fixtures this season, conceding three goals.
His latest clean sheet took his tally to two for the campaign, and he will be eyeing another one at FNB Stadium on Tuesday. Kick off is at 19:30 (SAST).
