Duhan van der Merwe and Josh Adams score hat-tricks as Covid-hit Lions put Sharks to the sword

It was a tough night for Anthony Watson and Liam Williams, both of whom had to pull out because of the Covid outbreak but Adams seized his moment again.

The Wales wing demonstrated he was not just a finisher either, picking up a loose ball deep in his half and flicking a great pass to put Rees-Zammit over for a breakaway try.

Farrell may have been without a number on his back but he was an imposing figure, giving Gatland food for thought about the fly-half position while Iain Henderson leading the side with aplomb and a towering presence and Bundee Aki powered over for a try from close range.

Gatland will have been impressed that two tries in the first seven minutes established dominance for the Lions, despite all the challenges of their pre-match preparations, and their collisions were too powerful across the park for the Sharks to be able make any meaningful impact in the contest.

Inevitably questions are being posed from the UK and Ireland about the wisdom of this tour taking place in a country experiencing a third wave, but the experience here is very different. The South Africans desperately want the tour to be a success and are relishing the opportunity to see the Lions here despite all the challenges. Whether or not we make it to the Test series is a different story altogether.
