CAPE TOWN – One of five suspected armed robbers was shot dead while another was wounded during a shootout with the police on Sunday.

The suspects allegedly robbed a shop attached to a filling station along the N2 highway at the entrance to The Crags between Plettenberg Bay and the Tsitsikamma toll plaza.

They made off with staff’s cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police spokesperson Chris Spies said officers promptly responded and a shootout ensued with suspects firing at police.

“One suspect was fatally wounded and another sustained gunshot wounds. He was taken to hospital. Three other suspects were apprehended and are in police custody. A number of different calibre firearms were recovered as well as cash,” said Spies.

A getaway vehicle was found abandoned in the forest where police were still searching for one more suspect following another shootout with traffic officials.

“Various policing units including members of the National Task Force, Eden Cluster Detectives, Crime Intelligence and the Eden Cluster combating team are still on scene,” said Spies.

Meanwhile, seven suspects arrested on Friday in Rondebosch for possession of unlicensed firearms and being linked to a business robbery in Tableview are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s court on Monday.

Police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said Rondebosch police were alerted to two vehicles in their area whose occupants were acting suspiciously.

“They pursued the vehicles and on Milner Road they stopped the vehicles. In one vehicle they arrested five suspects and recovered an unlicensed firearm with ammunition.”

The second vehicle fitted the description of a vehicle used in a business robbery in Tableview on Thursday.

“Rondebosch police arrested two other suspects. Whether the suspects could be linked to other crime incidents will be determined as investigations unfold. The arrested suspects are currently facing possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition as well as armed robbery charges,” she said.
